Abstract
A technical study was undertaken of paper-based ephemera used in Germany 1920s-30s by Kurt Schwitters to create mixed-media, sometimes three-dimenional, collages. Microfadometry, a rapid and non-destructive accelerated light-fading method for informing display duration decisions, was carried out on all distinct paper-based elements in 5 of Schwitters’ and 2 contemporary collages by Raoul Hausmann and by Julian Trevelyan. Many coloured components in this small sample were more lightfast than had been feared.
