Abstract

Within the history of Western European art the nude is a central subject. For schools, this can be a problematic area for study. The Venus Re-Defined resource pack was produced to accompany a display at Tate Gallery Liverpool which included sculptures by Rodin, Matisse, Renoir and Maillol. It aims to actively engage young people in discussions of these works and the debates which surround them. Drawing upon a feminist critique, the pack identifies three themes for exploration: sculpture and the body, the relationship between artist and model and the representation of women. This paper examines how teachers used the pack in six secondary schools and explores results of using this issue based approach.
