Abstract
Chris Ofili’s The Upper Room 1999–2002 consists of thirteen paintings displayed within a specially designed and carefully lit room. This paper considers the durability of and potential disadvantages resulting from the dyed polyester resin and elephant dung balls that Ofili used in the paintings, looking in particular at their vulnerabilities to light and heat when on display.
