Abstract
Archives have become an increasingly well-known and used resource, not only for many academic disciplines but also for a more general audience. From being perceived as an unfamiliar specialist field, archives have now acquired both greater currency and a more diverse range of meanings. A significant catalyst for this has been developments in digital technology and the frequent use of the term ‘archive’ in this context. This chapter considers how the developments of Web 2.0 are affecting, and may go on to affect, the practices of archives, as they endeavour to open up their collections in new ways, to meet a range of user needs and embrace the possibilities of new technology.
