Erika Balsom’s study of The Girl Chewing Gum 1976 by British artist John Smithis one in our series of In Focus projects looking in depth at individual artworks in the collection. Here she discusses the notion of truth in documentary filmmaking and how the infrastructures for the production, distribution and exhibition of artists’ moving image have been transformed in recent years.
