Abstract
Samuel Shaw discusses William Rothenstein’s sketchbook from the artist’s teenage years in Paris, the value of intensely studying a painting, and the paradox at the heart of researching such an enigmatic work of art. His study of The Doll’s House 1899–1900 is one in our series of In Focus projects about individual artworks in the collection.
