Abstract
Investigates the problem of lead sulphide darkening of 19th century painting materials. This darkening, thought to be caused by the formation of the dark-brown compound lead sulphide, was believed to occur wherever lead was present in the ground and oil paint layers or as a drier in a final oil varnish. The tacking margin of a Turner oil sketch and a 19th century primed canvas were examined.
